Fishguard (Welsh: Abergwaun), twinned with Loctudy (Breton: Loktudi)
in Brittany saw the surrender following the last attempt to invade mainland
Britain. The treaty was signed in 1797 at the ancient Royal Oak public
house situated in upper Fishguard.
The whole story is told by the Fishguard Tapestry, created for the 200th
anniversary as a reference to the Bayeux Tapestry and which is on display
in a hall near the town centre.
Other notable areas of interest include Cwm Harbour in lower Fishguard,
the setting for the 1972 film production of Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood
starring Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and Peter O'Toole amongst others.
Fishguard can boast fine buildings of architectural interest. There
are many places to eat and enjoy a drink offering a wide choice of menu
and there are art galleries and other places to walk and explore.
Fishguard is an excellent place to begin your exploration of the beautiful
Pembrokeshire countryside, its coastline and delightful towns and villages.
